The idea
A timber stair turning through stone.
A private residence in the Bvlgari Residences, Dubai, organised around a spiral stair in solid timber. Its treads fan out from a hollow core and its balustrade rises as one continuous ribbon of oak, linking the two floors of the plan.
Around it, walls are clad in vein-cut travertine, laid in long horizontal bands that run from the stair hall into the rooms. Fluted timber joinery, recessed shelves of dark metal and a round mirror set into the stone keep the palette short: oak, travertine and light.

About the project
Oak underfoot, stone at the hand
The visit begins in the stair hall, where the spiral is seen whole before it is climbed. From there the stone walls lead off into the rooms on either side, their bands drawing the eye along. On the way up, the oak ribbon stays under the hand, and the upper floor opens from its landing. A short detour reaches the powder room, darker and more enclosed than the rest of the plan.
Silver travertine lines the walls of the stair hall: cool, pale and reflecting light down the stairwell. In the powder room the travertine turns dark, giving that small room a deeper, quieter tone. Oak is kept for the stair itself, the warm material where hands and feet meet the house. Fluted timber appears in the cabinetry, its ribs catching side light and breaking up the long stone surfaces. The residence sits within Dubai's Bvlgari Residences.
