The idea

Dark stone, light and a long axis.

This private residence in Nad Al Sheba is planned along one long axis. The main entrance opens into a tall hall walled in dark veined stone and bronze-framed panels, with a strip of black water set into the white floor and a planted court of white pebbles at its end, under rings of light that hang through a double-height void.

The main majlis repeats the axis at a larger scale. A white marble runner inlaid with a stepped border leads between two long rows of seating in navy velvet, with marble-topped tables on bronze bases, under blue glass chandeliers, between tall windows dressed in deep blue.

About the project

From dark water to blue glass

Arrival is through the main entrance, where the eye is led straight down the house. The black water runs ahead along the floor to the pebble court, and the rings of light hang high in the void above. Beyond the hall lies the main majlis, longer and grander, which takes up the same line: the runner sets the route, seating faces across it, and daylight comes in through tall windows on both sides.

In the hall, metal discs and striped panels give the dark walls a finer texture and catch the light. In the majlis, navy velvet and black marble form the seating, dense and dark, so the inlaid runner reads clearly between the rows. Overhead, the blue glass chandeliers carry colour up to the ceiling and soften the formality of the room. The residence is in Nad Al Sheba, Dubai.
