The idea

Steel lines and dark stone.

A concept design for a Porsche Design store in Beirut. The store is a long, double-height space along a glazed facade. Walls are screened in horizontal metal slats, the floor is laid in large tiles of dark polished granite, and steel columns run the length of the room under a dark ceiling.

Products are shown as objects in a lounge rather than on shelves: a pool table, a grand piano and a kitchen each stand on their own raised platform, and walnut counters line the display wall. A stair rises along the glazing to a mezzanine behind a white balustrade.

About the project

A slow walk past objects on platforms

Inside the entrance the store opens at full height, glazing on one side and screened walls on the other. Walking its length, the visitor passes the display wall first, then reaches the lounge, where each product is met as a piece of furniture in use rather than an item on sale. At the far side, the stair climbs beside the glass, and daylight follows it up to the mezzanine.

Metal slats screen the walls and draw long horizontal lines along the room. Below, dark granite gives the floor weight and a polished reflection; above, dark concrete closes the ceiling and lets the products stand forward. Walnut, used on the display counters, is the one warm material, placed exactly where hands meet the objects. In this Beirut concept, the palette stays dark and technical so the products carry the colour.
