The idea

Timber, dark glass and pale stone.

This two-bedroom apartment in Egypt is planned as one long living space, from the kitchen to a wall of glass at the far end. Pale stone floors run throughout, a cove of light follows the ceiling, and walnut veneer and dark glass line the kitchen wall. A white stone island with bar stools sits at its centre, and the kitchen can be left open or closed off behind dark glass.

The living room gathers around a deep grey sectional, low dark tables and a fluted leather armchair, with a long timber media wall opposite. A dining table sits under a cluster of glass globes. In the master bedroom, a panelled headboard trimmed in brass sits against a grey wall hung with framed prints; the second bedroom pairs a grey upholstered bed with a full-height wardrobe in dark glass.

About the project

From the kitchen end to the far window

The walk begins at the kitchen end, where the island stands between the cooking wall and the living space. Moving along the room, you pass the dining table under its glass globes, then the sofa and media wall, until the glazing at the end brings in the daylight. The two bedrooms complete the plan.

The white stone kitchen island gives the working end a bright, durable surface. On the sofa, cushions in houndstooth and linen add pattern and a softer texture to the grey upholstery. In the master bedroom, brass-trimmed panels on the headboard catch the light, and framed prints on the grey wall add a personal layer. Walnut veneer and dark glass recur across the apartment, a darker counterpoint to the pale floors. This apartment in Egypt relies on a small palette, repeated.
