The idea

Classical rooms in cream, gold and stone.

A private residence in Sharjah, drawn in a classical language. The entrance hall opens under a coffered ceiling and crystal chandeliers, with columns, panelled walls and a marble floor inlaid with a medallion. A curved stair with a wrought-iron balustrade rises to a round first-floor lobby.

The majlis and a long formal dining room take the ground floor, with damask upholstery and gilded detail. Family sitting rooms upstairs are softer, in patterned wallpaper and deep blue drapes. Each bedroom has its own colour and headboard, a playroom is fitted out for the children, and the bathrooms are lined in honey and brown marble with gold mosaic.

About the project

Formal below, softer above.

This private residence in Sharjah is designed by IAIA in a classical interior language of cream, gold and stone. The house is organised by degrees of formality. Reception rooms on the ground floor carry the full classical vocabulary of columns, coffering, crystal and gilding, while the floors above relax into a quieter register for everyday family life.

The entrance sets the sequence: an inlaid marble floor with a central medallion, and a curved wrought-iron stair rising to a round lobby that marks the move from public to private. Blue damask on the dining chairs links the formal rooms to the deep blue drapes of the family sitting rooms upstairs. Bedrooms are told apart by colour and by padded upholstered walls, and a playroom is given to the children. The bathrooms return to stone, in honey and brown marble with gold mosaic and arched mirrors.
