The idea

What can be done with marble.

One question drove Villa K: what can be done with marble? “We wanted to show what can be done with marble,” says IAIA Head of Design Darine Jabeili. The result is a house of altered materiality, where depth, tone and atmosphere come almost entirely from stone. Slabs were chosen to match one another, then wrapped across floors and walls, laid in chevrons at the entrance and fluted in the reception.

The two-storey plan runs from a stone lobby along a central hallway. Double-height volumes mark the entrance, the stair lobby and the main reception. In the reception, a cloud of glass pendants hangs above a fireplace wall of travertine and walnut shelving. The dining hall gathers around a table of green-veined stone, and walnut slats and soft upholstery warm the TV room.

Upstairs, each bedroom and bathroom takes its own marble and its own mood: grey, black-and-gold or honey onyx. All of them are set against walnut and calm daylight.

How we choose and detail stone in a villa: villa interior design in Dubai, from plot to finished room.

About the project

Stone room by stone room

The reception opens the visit, a double-height room in grey stone where the stair rises above the piano and the pendants gather overhead. Living and dining follow in warmer walnut. Outside, the pool court is lined by its stone wall, olive trees and a timber pergola, used by day and lit at night. Back indoors, the media and games rooms hold a screening wall and a bar. Upstairs, bedrooms, bathrooms and walk-in dressing rooms complete the house.

Grey marble covers the reception and the stair, a cool, even ground for the double height. In the bathrooms, black and gold marble brings contrast, while honey-veined stone gives a softer, glowing tone. Walnut runs through slatted walls and joinery, the timber that warms each marble room. This villa is in Meydan, Dubai.
