234 | Private Majlis
A pavilion for receiving guests.
This private majlis in Al Awir stands as its own pavilion: a low, stone-clad volume with deep overhangs, lit at night from the planting and the water around it. Inside, one long hall is set out for receiving guests. Sofas line both sides on a blue rug, under a row of glass chandeliers, and the white marble floor runs the full length of the room.
Gold frames the space. A brass band traces the ceiling and walls, and gilded lattice screens, mirrored panels and brass lamps punctuate the white veined stone. Deep blue velvet curtains soften the tall windows. A dining room, a smaller sitting room and a washroom of grey stone and brass vessel basins complete the plan.

Stone outside, gold and blue within
The approach is to the pavilion itself, low and stone-clad, its overhangs throwing deep shade, with water and planting lit around it after dark. Inside, the majlis hall opens as one long room, seating on both sides and the chandeliers in a line overhead. The dining room and the smaller sitting room come after the hall, and the washroom closes the sequence, its stone and brass seen at close quarters.
Gold arabesque wallcovering dresses the walls of the hall, giving them a soft, patterned glow. Brass lattice screens break up the long room and filter views across it. Blue upholstery and the blue rug bring depth and colour to the seating and tie the hall together. In the washroom, a basin in chiselled white stone gives a rougher, more tactile finish beside the polished brass. The majlis is in Al Awir, Dubai.
